There are many different hobbies. I never considered my hobby as a "real hobby" because my hobbies seem so plain and does not produce anything tangible. However, I realized that hobbies don't have to be something fancy.
The definition of hobby is an activity that someone does for pleasure when they are not working. It is not to be productive but to enjoy someone's free time. There are actually many things I do in my free time or I enjoy doing for my own pleasure. I would like to introduce them one by one. Today, I want to talk about my hobby of listening to podcasts.
Listening to Podcasts:
This is probably my number one hobby and this is closely connected to my second hobby. I love listening to podcasts. There are many podcasts I subscribe to and enjoy listening to. Below are some of the categories of podcasts I listen to.
A. Daily Life Talks:
I listen to daily talks from Koreans living in London and Newzealand. It is fun to hear what life is like in foreign countries and how Koreans live in foreign countries. Whenever I listen to these podcasts, it makes me really want to live abroad. If I were younger, I would definitely challenge myself to do a working holiday to give myself a chance to live abroad.
B. Audio Books:
I love reading but another thing I like is listening to audiobooks. There is one podcast where a mother of a boy read a book every night. They make recordings of their daily night readings and upload them as an episode. This podcast introduced me to much classic literature. I found that classics are so lovely and worthy of reading.
Before I listen to this podcast, I did not like classics simply because I thought they are boring. It is probably because I read most of the classics as a part of literature classes and I was horrified with all the exams and tests related to them. However, without worries about tests and exams, I became one of the people who praises classical literature. I became to understand why they become classics. One beauty of classics is that it contains unchanging values -- values or thoughts that transcend time.
I introduced some of the books that I read after listening to the podcast in this blog. The best book I got to know from the podcast is "Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I also listen to this podcast as a lullaby.
C. Knowledgable Podcast:
There are some podcasts that provide a lot of knowledge. I listen to the Korean history podcast and it is so much fun! I bet if students learn history through podcasts, everyone would love exploring and learning history.
Another podcast is called "What do we do when we gather together? It is all about food." This is a podcast that introduced many things related to food. Not only the history of food but also talks about science related to food, the food industry, trends, and so on. It is fun to find more details about food which is always around us. I got to think about economic trends related to food, to learn about food history, and science that is linked to food and hygiene.
Book review podcasts are another thing I love listening to. These podcasts trigger my interest in books that I did not read yet. Normally I end up visiting the library to check out the books that were introduced in the podcast and I enjoy reading them thinking about the insights given through the podcast.
What is your hobby? Please let me know on the comment section about your hobby! I would love to hear your story.
Do you listen to Podcast? What kind of podcast do you enjoy listening to? Let me know by comments!
