Protecting Personal Information in Social Media Platform

How much do you use SNS a day? It is said that more than 60% of the world’s population uses SNS for an average of 2 hours and 26 minutes a day. People take pictures, write, and share their daily lives on social media. When using SNS, you realize that often times you encounter feed or advertisement about things you have interest in recent days. Sometimes you see an AD of a product that you need. Also, when you visit a website or app, or purchase a product from a certain brand at an online store, advertisements for similar products or of that brand continuously appear. How on Earth does SNS know what my interest is or what I need?

When you sign up for SNS, there is a section where it asked your agreement to use the collection and use of personal information. Based on the consent to this, Facebook or Instagram provide contents based on various activities such as hashtags, photos, videos I upload or products of I click. When users enter various information on SNS, write posts, or express their taste and inclination through likes, comments, and so on, social media uses this information to analyze users’ preference and display contents or advertisement that fits that analysis. This is convenient that users’y personal information and interests are used to provide optimized or most suitable contents for users.

Some people may worry that someone might misuse their personal information accumulated on social media. However, there is a way to manage and control personal information while using social media. Meta operates the Meta’s Privacy Protection Center which provides detailed information on Meta’s approach to privacy protection. Here, users can control the use of their personal information. – the use of your information on advertisement, other users access to view your activities, and other controls to protect your personal information.
