Beyond the Pews: How Shincheonji Church is Revitalizing Local Communities Across Korea

When we think of a church, we often imagine activities held strictly within its walls. However, the Shincheonji Church of Jesus is redefining this image by stepping out into the streets. From the historic alleys of Incheon to the world-famous cherry blossom paths of Jinhae, here is how two different tribes are making a real-world impact. Incheon: "Little Heroes" Leading the Way In the Dohwa-dong neighborhood of Incheon, the Matthew Tribe Jemuilpo Church is teaching the next generation the value of service. On April 5th, in honor of Arbor Day (Sikmogil), young children from the elementary division joined adult volunteers for a neighborhood cleanup. This isn't a one-time event. They have conducted nearly 100 cleanup sessions since last July, maintaining a steady presence of 3–4 times a month. By picking up litter and learning the specifics of waste separation, these children are growing into environmentally conscious citizens. "Seeing the kids pick up trash made the...

Shincheonji’s “Together Culture” Offering a New Path for the Korean Church

In the midst of a struggling Korean church, the community-driven approach of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, particularly the "Together Culture" promoted by its Simon Tribe, is gaining attention as a potential solution to restore what was lost after the COVID-19 pandemic. This focus on community love and practical faith is breathing new life into a church ecosystem in need of revitalization.

Shincheonji’s commitment to the Biblical teaching that "one soul is more precious than the whole world" is evident in its active promotion of fellowship and communal activities. These efforts are fostering emotional bonds among members and helping them maintain a faith-centered life.

Starting the Day with Faith

Each morning, Simon Tribe members share Bible verses in a group chat, setting the tone for the day. Despite busy schedules, this simple practice strengthens their emotional connection and keeps their faith intact. As one member, Kim Yeon-seo, shared, “During times when I was about to give up, the shared words of faith helped me reflect and regain my spiritual focus.”

Hobbies that Heal the Body and Soul

Beyond faith sharing, the Simon Tribe supports a wide range of hobby clubs—like hiking, dancing, reading, and language learning—that help members regain their physical and emotional health. After being isolated during the pandemic, these offline activities are helping members reconnect and bring vitality back to their faith lives. One member, Kim Chang-woo, expressed, "Thanks to the encouragement of the community, I found new energy in life."

A New Direction for the Church

Even church leaders within the broader Christian community are noticing the positive change brought about by Shincheonji’s practical approach to faith. One pastor who collaborated with Shincheonji through an MOU said, “Shincheonji is not only focused on the word, but also on living it out. The members are genuinely touched by the community spirit.” Others have noted that shifting their church’s atmosphere to a more communal focus has led to a positive transformation.

“Together Culture” as the Growth Force of Shincheonji

Simon Tribe leaders emphasize that Shincheonji’s growth isn’t just about increasing numbers but about nurturing a practical, community-focused culture. "The ‘Together Culture’ will help more people rediscover the true values of faith,” they said.

As the Korean church grapples with challenges such as individualism, materialism, and growing disillusionment, Shincheonji’s emphasis on community and structured faith training offers a compelling alternative. It’s clear that the “Together Culture” is a movement that may shape the future of Korean Christianity.
