International Concern Grows Over South Korea's Detention of 95-Year-Old Religious Leader

The recent detention and prosecution of Chairman Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old leader of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, has sparked intense scrutiny from international human rights and religious freedom organizations. Legal experts and sociologists worldwide are raising critical questions regarding South Korea’s adherence to global human rights standards and the principle of state neutrality. The Controversy Surrounding the Detention On June 24, 2026, South Korean authorities took Chairman Lee into custody on charges related to the Political Parties Act, followed by a formal indictment on June 30. Prosecutors allege that between July 2021 and January 2024, the church organized the enrollment of approximately 50,000 members into the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to influence internal primaries. However, the legal dispute does not center on party membership itself, but on whether coercion was involved. While prosecutors allege a forced campaign, Shincheonji Church maintains that all p...

Shincheonji Church Encourages Healthy Living Through Faith-Based Education

In today’s world, more and more people are becoming interested in living healthier lives. With the rise of fast food and processed meals, however, developing and maintaining good eating habits is not always easy. That’s why the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, particularly the Bartholomew Tribe’s Gimpo Church, is offering practical and inspiring solutions through community-based health education.

A Response to Modern Health Challenges

According to Korea’s National Statistical Office, over 37% of adults in Korea were classified as obese in 2022, and that number continues to grow. Unhealthy eating habits not only affect personal well-being but also increase national healthcare costs. Recognizing this social issue, Shincheonji Gimpo Church launched a daily health education program starting in March 2025 for all members.

Faith and Health Go Hand in Hand

The program includes both online and in-person sessions during weekday mornings. Led by Head Pastor Shin Dong-guk, members read books on nutrition and healthy living, share ideas, and reflect on their daily habits together. The goal is to support both the spiritual and physical health of every member—emphasizing that a strong faith life also needs a healthy body.

Building Motivation and Lasting Habits

One member shared, “I used to give up quickly whenever I tried to eat healthier. But doing it with church members keeps me motivated!” Another parent noted that even her children have started eating better after hearing about nutrition at church.

By encouraging members to think about their inner well-being and helping them avoid emotional eating, the program has helped participants feel lighter, more energetic, and closer to God.

A Healthy Church Is a Happy Church

The leadership team, including church administrator Song Jae-ho, believes this program strengthens their community by promoting gratitude, contentment, and self-control. “Eating habits reflect what’s in our hearts,” he said. “Our goal is to build a church that helps both the soul and body thrive in God’s love.”

Pastor Shin also shared future plans to host a church-wide fitness day to encourage fun physical activities among all members.

Why It Matters

In a time when society is searching for healthier lifestyles, this health-focused effort by Shincheonji Church draws public interest. It shows how churches can be places not just of worship—but also of growth, healing, and real-life support.
