International Concern Grows Over South Korea's Detention of 95-Year-Old Religious Leader

The recent detention and prosecution of Chairman Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old leader of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, has sparked intense scrutiny from international human rights and religious freedom organizations. Legal experts and sociologists worldwide are raising critical questions regarding South Korea’s adherence to global human rights standards and the principle of state neutrality. The Controversy Surrounding the Detention On June 24, 2026, South Korean authorities took Chairman Lee into custody on charges related to the Political Parties Act, followed by a formal indictment on June 30. Prosecutors allege that between July 2021 and January 2024, the church organized the enrollment of approximately 50,000 members into the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to influence internal primaries. However, the legal dispute does not center on party membership itself, but on whether coercion was involved. While prosecutors allege a forced campaign, Shincheonji Church maintains that all p...

[Shincheonji Inside④] Faith in Action — How a Church is Quietly Changing Communities

“Thanks to them, our neighborhood feels warmer.”

That’s how one resident described the impact of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, not through loud declarations, but through quiet, consistent love in action.

For 39 years, Shincheonji’s volunteer efforts have extended far beyond the church walls. Their mission: to live out the teachings of Jesus by being the light and salt of the world — not just in word, but in deed.

A Church That Loves Its Neighbors

Since 1986, Shincheonji volunteers have served communities across Korea with compassion and humility. Whether responding to natural disasters, cleaning coastal areas, or providing care for the elderly, the heart behind each action remains the same: freely giving what was freely received — life, love, and hope.

One core belief guides their work:
"As the sky gives light, rain, and air without cost, so we share the life and love God has given us."

This isn’t a strategy to grow membership or gain attention. It’s the natural response of people who have found meaning in the Word.

Blood That Gives Life

Perhaps the most visible expression of this love is Shincheonji’s nationwide blood donation movement. Over the past four years, more than 210,000 members have participated, contributing blood worth over 930 million KRW and donating thousands of blood certificates to those in need — including children with cancer and patients facing surgery.

In 2022, the church earned official recognition from the Korea Record Institute for organizing the fastest and largest group donation campaign. The youth group “We Are One” even broke the Guinness World Record by registering 71,121 donors in 24 hours.

Even during the height of COVID-19, Shincheonji members stepped up, donating blood and plasma that supported Korea’s first domestic vaccine trials. This year, they’ve launched another large-scale campaign — 10,000 participants in 84 days — not for praise, but to save lives.

Volunteers Who Bring Healing

Shincheonji volunteers serve in every corner of life:

  • Cleaning polluted rivers and coastlines

  • Delivering daily essentials to the elderly

  • Restoring homes damaged by floods or fires

  • Providing haircuts, free medical care, and emotional support

These aren’t one-time events — they are ongoing expressions of faith. In just the past seven years, more than 580,000 volunteer acts have touched the lives of over 750,000 people.

Changing Hearts Through Service

Their kindness is shifting perceptions. Once misunderstood, Shincheonji’s volunteers are now recognized by local residents, shop owners, and even leaders from traditional churches. One pastor who witnessed the volunteer work firsthand said, “I used to believe what others said, but after seeing their actions, I realized I was wrong.”

In a time of distrust and division, these sincere acts of service are creating connections and building trust.

Love That Shines Brighter Than Words

Shincheonji’s story is not one of publicity—it’s about people who choose to live their faith, day by day. They don’t just say, “Love your neighbor.” They do it. They don’t wait for approval. They serve because it’s right.

Even when misunderstood, they continue. Even when ignored, they shine. Because light doesn’t ask for attention. It simply drives out darkness.
