Shincheonji Volunteer Group in Gwangju Delivers 3,000 Bottles of Ice Water to Help Locals Beat the Summer Heat

Caring for neighbors, protecting health, and practicing sustainable giving — all during Korea’s hottest days

As Korea faces one of its hottest summers in recent years, with temperatures in many regions soaring above 38°C (100°F), public health concerns related to heatstroke and dehydration are growing. In response to this extreme heat, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group – Gwangju Branch has stepped up with a refreshing and heartwarming initiative: the "Cool Sharing Campaign."

💧 3,000 Bottles of Ice-Cold Relief

From July 7 to 11, volunteers are distributing 3,000 bottles of ice water — around 600 bottles per day — to citizens, elders, and market vendors in Malmabou Market and nearby areas like Usan Neighborhood Park. These small but powerful gestures are making a big difference, especially for those most vulnerable to the heat such as seniors living alone and outdoor workers.

But this isn’t just about hydration. Along with the water, volunteers are sharing heat illness prevention tips, including:

• Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat

• Drink water frequently

• Rest immediately if experiencing dizziness or headaches

They also offered warm encouragement:

“Let’s overcome the summer heat together.”

🌿 Kindness Fueled by Sustainability

What makes this campaign even more special is how it was funded — through a used clothes collection campaign. The Gwangju branch turned the proceeds from clothing donations into a means to purchase the ice water. This not only shows thoughtful planning but also reflects the values of eco-friendly, sustainable volunteer work.

This kind of “circular service” — collecting and reusing resources to care for others — embodies the spirit of giving that benefits both people and the planet.

This year’s intense heat has already led to a rise in heat-related illnesses across Korea, prompting national emergency alerts. Against this backdrop, Shincheonji’s volunteer efforts are not just timely — they’re vital.

“Heat-related illnesses can be prevented by following three basic rules: shade, water, and rest,” said a representative from the volunteer group.
“We hope this campaign builds stronger bonds in our community and helps everyone stay healthy throughout the summer.”
