International Concern Grows Over South Korea's Detention of 95-Year-Old Religious Leader

The recent detention and prosecution of Chairman Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old leader of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, has sparked intense scrutiny from international human rights and religious freedom organizations. Legal experts and sociologists worldwide are raising critical questions regarding South Korea’s adherence to global human rights standards and the principle of state neutrality. The Controversy Surrounding the Detention On June 24, 2026, South Korean authorities took Chairman Lee into custody on charges related to the Political Parties Act, followed by a formal indictment on June 30. Prosecutors allege that between July 2021 and January 2024, the church organized the enrollment of approximately 50,000 members into the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to influence internal primaries. We Are One Changwon Branch Honored with Award from the Korean Red Cross

1,200 Youth Blood Donors in Three Years Recognized for Lifesaving Impact

The youth volunteer group We Are One (Busan–Gyeongnam East Regional Association, Changwon Branch) has been officially recognized by the Korean Red Cross Gyeongnam Blood Center for its outstanding contribution to humanitarian service and blood donation efforts. On September 24, the center presented a plaque of appreciation to Branch Leader Na Hyeong-won during a ceremony attended by local officials and Red Cross representatives.

A Record of Steady Contribution

Since its launch on July 30, 2022, the Changwon Branch has carried out regular blood donation campaigns. Over the past three years, more than 1,200 members have donated blood, helping ensure a stable supply during critical shortages.

Gyeongnam Blood Center Director Lee Jeong-woo expressed gratitude, saying, “Whenever blood supply was at risk, We Are One’s consistent participation helped us overcome the crisis. Their dedication has been invaluable.” He also encouraged continued involvement, especially during the winter season when donations tend to decline.

Youth Leadership in Lifesaving Service

Branch Leader Na Hyeong-won emphasized the deeper meaning behind the initiative:
“Blood donation may seem like a small act, but it is the surest way to save a life. We will continue our regular blood donation campaigns while also expanding our outreach to environmental protection and support for vulnerable groups.”

This award highlights We Are One’s identity as a nationwide youth-led movement, often described as “the largest youth blood donation campaign in Korea.”

2025 “We Are Red” Campaign in Progress

Currently, We Are One is leading the 2025 We Are Red Summer–Fall Blood Donation Campaign, aiming for 10,000 participants by October 18. As of August 31, more than 8,000 youth registered, and over 7,500 successfully donated blood, marking the campaign as one of the largest youth blood donation drives in the country.

A Movement of Hope

The Changwon Branch’s recognition by the Korean Red Cross is not only an award but also a symbol of the growing role of young people in sustaining life-saving efforts. Their service stands as proof that small acts, when multiplied, create a national impact.
