International Concern Grows Over South Korea's Detention of 95-Year-Old Religious Leader

The recent detention and prosecution of Chairman Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old leader of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, has sparked intense scrutiny from international human rights and religious freedom organizations. Legal experts and sociologists worldwide are raising critical questions regarding South Korea’s adherence to global human rights standards and the principle of state neutrality. The Controversy Surrounding the Detention On June 24, 2026, South Korean authorities took Chairman Lee into custody on charges related to the Political Parties Act, followed by a formal indictment on June 30. Prosecutors allege that between July 2021 and January 2024, the church organized the enrollment of approximately 50,000 members into the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to influence internal primaries. Shincheonji Andre Church Shares Chuseok Greetings and Plogging for the Community

Every autumn, Korea celebrates Chuseok (추석), one of its biggest traditional holidays. Families gather to share food, honor ancestors, and express gratitude. It is also a time to spread kindness and strengthen bonds within local communities.

This year, Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony – Andre Tribe’s Andre Church (led by Tribe Leader Lee Jung-woo) carried out special volunteer activities to celebrate Chuseok with their neighbors.

Warm Greetings and Gift Sharing

On September 25, members of Andre Church visited around 20 local shops near the training center. They personally delivered songpyeon (traditional half-moon rice cakes) and holiday gift sets to shop owners. The heartfelt greetings were warmly received, with many expressing appreciation for the thoughtful gesture.

Community Plogging for a Cleaner City

On September 27, about 32 members of Andre Church took part in plogging activities (jogging or walking while picking up litter) near Busan’s Peace Market, bus stops, and the Beomil 5-dong area. In just two hours, they collected nearly 200 liters of trash. Local residents praised their efforts, saying the area became noticeably cleaner thanks to the campaign.

Spreading Positivity During Chuseok

In addition to environmental care, the volunteers also set up small stands to greet citizens with holiday well-wishes and informational materials. Passersby responded with encouragement, noting that Shincheonji Church continues to contribute positively to society.

Building Lasting Connections

A representative of Andre Church shared:

“By personally greeting shop owners and residents, and smiling together while plogging, our relationship with the community grew stronger. We will continue to create opportunities to connect with citizens through ongoing volunteer work.”

The Spirit of Chuseok and Volunteerism

Chuseok is more than just a holiday of harvest—it represents sharing, harmony, and gratitude. Shincheonji Andre Church’s activities reflect this spirit by giving back to the community and fostering unity. As participants themselves expressed, ongoing social contribution can leave a lasting impression and build positive recognition in society.

✨ Through small acts of service, Shincheonji volunteers are helping Chuseok become even more meaningful—not just for families, but for the entire community.
