International Concern Grows Over South Korea's Detention of 95-Year-Old Religious Leader

The recent detention and prosecution of Chairman Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old leader of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, has sparked intense scrutiny from international human rights and religious freedom organizations. Shincheonji Volunteer Group Busan East Branch Leads Drug Prevention Campaign at Busan Marathon

The Shincheonji Volunteer Group Busan East Branch carried out a meaningful public-safety campaign on November 16 at the 27th International Newspaper Busan Marathon, held at Dadaepo Beach Park in Busan. The event focused on raising awareness about drug misuse and preventing the casual spread of drug-related slang among youth and citizens.

Promoting Drug Awareness Through Citizen Participation

According to the Busan East Branch, the campaign was designed to help citizens recognize how easily drug-related terminology is used in everyday conversations—especially among teenagers—and to encourage the public to stop normalizing such language.

To make the campaign engaging and memorable, volunteers prepared interactive programs including:

  • O/X quiz on drug-related terms

  • Distribution of educational materials

  • Conversation booths for drug-prevention awareness

The team strategically operated the booth ahead of the marathon, allowing both runners and spectators to naturally join the activities. Volunteers also provided energy bars along with leaflets, creating a friendly and approachable atmosphere that encouraged more participation.

Strong Citizen Support for the Campaign

Many citizens expressed concern about the drug issues emerging in recent news. One attendee shared, “I recently saw that even middle school students are being exposed to drugs. Campaigns like this are truly necessary.”

The positive feedback highlighted the growing public awareness of drug misuse and the need for preventive education that reaches both youth and adults.

Ongoing Efforts for a Safe and Healthy Community

A representative of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Busan East Branch emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating:

“Drug prevention is an issue that society must address together. We will continue developing programs that encourage more citizens to participate and help strengthen community safety.”

The Busan East Branch continues to carry out various public-benefit activities, including drug-prevention campaigns, environmental protection projects, and disaster-recovery support—working steadily to build a healthier and safer local community.
