International Concern Grows Over South Korea's Detention of 95-Year-Old Religious Leader

The recent detention and prosecution of Chairman Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old leader of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, has sparked intense scrutiny from international human rights and religious freedom organizations. Legal experts and sociologists worldwide are raising critical questions regarding South Korea’s adherence to global human rights standards and the principle of state neutrality. The Controversy Surrounding the Detention On June 24, 2026, South Korean authorities took Chairman Lee into custody on charges related to the Political Parties Act, followed by a formal indictment on June 30. Prosecutors allege that between July 2021 and January 2024, the church organized the enrollment of approximately 50,000 members into the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to influence internal primaries. However, the legal dispute does not center on party membership itself, but on whether coercion was involved. While prosecutors allege a forced campaign, Shincheonji Church maintains that all p...

Shincheonji Peter Tribe Holds the 3rd Revelation Memorization “Heaven Exam”

On November 29, the Shincheonji Church of Jesus Peter Tribe held the 3rd Revelation Memorization Heaven Exam across seven churches — Gwangju, Mokpo, Yeosu, Suncheon, Songha, Gwangyang, and Haenam.

The large-scale exam took place in two sessions and has now become an annual tradition for the tribe.

According to the Peter Tribe, the Heaven Exam was created to help believers engrave the New Covenant—the Book of Revelation—into their hearts and minds. This year, a total of 11,057 members participated, choosing among three difficulty levels (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3).

A Growing Examination With Higher Difficulty

The tribe’s Education Department explained that the 2025 exam expanded the scope of required memorization and increased the difficulty, encouraging participants to master Revelation from chapter 1 to 22.

Their goal is to help members grow into what they call “walking Bibles”—believers who can recall and explain the Word accurately.

Inside each exam room, participants focused deeply as they recalled the verses connected to each question. The final Level 3 exam lasted 90 minutes, and many were seen releasing their tension after submitting their papers.

Participants Reflect on the Challenge

A Level 2 participant shared:

“There were moments when the verses didn’t come to mind quickly enough, so I couldn’t write them all. Next year, I want to memorize Revelation even more perfectly and take on Level 3.”

A first-time Level 3 examinee said:

“When I received the test paper, I felt the true weight of the Heaven Exam. Distinguishing similar passages chapter by chapter was difficult, and writing the entire book within the time limit was a real challenge.”

Encouragement From the Tribe Leader

Peter Tribe Leader Yoo Jae-wook encouraged those who took the exam:

“Your year of preparation will never be in vain. God remembers your effort and sincerity.
As believers who have learned the revealed Word from the one who saw and heard the fulfillment of Revelation, let us reveal the value of the Word with even clearer faith.”

Plans for 2026: A New “Master Level”

The Education Department also announced the introduction of a new Master Level for next year, requiring participants to write the entire Book of Revelation by hand.
They also plan to hold monthly in-person practice exams to strengthen members’ Scripture review.
