International Concern Grows Over South Korea's Detention of 95-Year-Old Religious Leader

The recent detention and prosecution of Chairman Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old leader of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, has sparked intense scrutiny from international human rights and religious freedom organizations. Legal experts and sociologists worldwide are raising critical questions regarding South Korea’s adherence to global human rights standards and the principle of state neutrality. The Controversy Surrounding the Detention On June 24, 2026, South Korean authorities took Chairman Lee into custody on charges related to the Political Parties Act, followed by a formal indictment on June 30. Prosecutors allege that between July 2021 and January 2024, the church organized the enrollment of approximately 50,000 members into the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to influence internal primaries. Shincheonji Ulsan Church Signs New Year Gospel Exchange MOU with Independent Church

Expanding Bible-Centered Cooperation in Ulsan

On January 12, 2026, Shincheonji Church of Jesus Ulsan Church, part of the Andre Tribe, signed its first New Year gospel exchange memorandum of understanding (MOU) with an independent church in the Ulsan region.

The agreement was held on the third floor of Shincheonji Ulsan Church, where both sides committed to expanding cooperation centered on the Bible and strengthening mutual faith exchange.

A Partnership Built on the Word

According to the agreement, the two churches pledged to deepen their relationship through Bible-based dialogue, teaching exchange, and faith cooperation, with the shared goal of moving beyond misunderstanding and prejudice to unity grounded in Scripture.

The independent church’s senior pastor explained that his connection with Shincheonji began through meeting a Shincheonji minister and learning the Word in a clear, logical way.

He shared that after the passing of his spiritual mentor, he experienced a period of deep inner struggle while leading his church, during which many members left. During that difficult time, studying the Bible through Shincheonji’s explanations helped him regain clarity and confidence in faith.

From Understanding to Trust

The pastor stated that Scripture was explained in a way that was easy to understand and rooted in biblical logic. As misconceptions were gradually resolved through continued dialogue, trust in Shincheonji grew.

He explained that over time, faith was built through ongoing study and conversation, eventually leading to the decision to sign the gospel exchange MOU.

He also emphasized the importance of acknowledging differences while remaining humble—learning where learning is needed and repenting where repentance is required—in order to follow God’s will more faithfully.

“Unity in the Bible Brings Peace”

The pastor added that if churches support and cooperate with one another as brothers within the Bible, the original purpose of religion can be restored, and a peaceful faith environment without conflict or division can be created.

Kim Han-soo, senior instructor of Shincheonji Ulsan Church, said he was grateful for such a meaningful start to the new year. He stated that cooperation grounded in God’s Word would serve as a positive example for many believers.

He also emphasized that since God, Jesus, and the Bible are one, believers should strive to become united in the Word to fulfill God’s will together.

Growing Gospel Exchange Nationwide

As of January 2026, more than 969 churches in Korea have signed gospel exchange MOUs with Shincheonji Church of Jesus. Among them, over 100 churches have proceeded to change their church signage, reflecting deeper cooperation and alignment in ministry.

This latest agreement in Ulsan highlights a continued trend of Bible-centered dialogue and cooperation among churches seeking unity through Scripture rather than division through misunderstanding.
