Shincheonji Malawi Region Conducts “Light and Salt Day” Environmental Cleanup in Blantyre

60 Zion Christian Mission Center Students Participate in Ongoing Community Service Initiative

The Shincheonji Malawi Region, under the Bartholomew Tribe of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, conducted its 11th “Light and Salt Day” environmental cleanup activity in Blantyre, Malawi.

According to a February 23 press release, the Malawi region has been carrying out volunteer activities twice a month since January, aiming to contribute positively to the local community.

Cleanup Activity in Blantyre City

On February 21, approximately 60 students from the Zion Christian Mission Center participated in a citywide street cleanup in Blantyre.

During the activity, volunteers collected:

  • 64 bags of waste

  • Each bag measuring 25 liters

  • Totaling approximately 1,600 liters of waste

The cleanup was conducted as part of the ongoing “Light and Salt Day” campaign.

Organizers stated that participants joined the initiative voluntarily with the intention of giving back to the community.

Community Response and Future Plans

Davie Kalemera (52, male, Manje), who has participated since the first cleanup event, shared that the initiative has encouraged him to think beyond simple volunteer work and consider how sustained efforts can create broader community change.

He also noted that two local citizens expressed interest in the activity, describing it as unprecedented in Blantyre and indicating willingness to cooperate with the Shincheonji Malawi Region.

In this round of activities, discussions were reportedly initiated with Times Group regarding the production of a documentary about the “Light and Salt Day” campaign.

Collaboration with Blantyre City

The Shincheonji Malawi Region stated that its goal is to establish a culture of voluntary environmental cleanup within Blantyre.

Blantyre City was previously recognized as one of the cleanest cities in Malawi. The initiative now promotes the slogan “Clean Blantyre” as part of efforts to restore that reputation.

Last year, the Malawi Region and Blantyre City held two meetings regarding cooperation on the “Light and Salt Day” initiative.

The city government is reportedly planning to collaborate on the installation of public trash bins as part of broader environmental management efforts. Discussions related to continued cooperation are ongoing within the city council, and volunteers are expected to participate actively.

Ongoing Environmental Engagement

Through regular twice-monthly cleanups, the Shincheonji Malawi Region continues its environmental engagement efforts in Blantyre.

The “Light and Salt Day” campaign represents a structured volunteer initiative aimed at encouraging civic responsibility and strengthening cooperation between community members and local authorities.
