"Running Together, Living Together": Shincheonji Couple Found the True Meaning of Partnership on the Football Pitch

In celebration of "Married Couples' Day" in South Korea (May 21st), a unique love story from the Matthias Tribe Daejeon Church of Shincheonji is shedding light on what it truly means to walk through life as a team. For this particular husband and wife, the secrets to a harmonious marriage weren't found in a textbook, but rather on the football pitch and through their shared spiritual journey. A Match Made on the Pitch The couple's story began where they both feel most at home: the football field. The husband (referred to as A), a former professional football player in Thailand, returned to South Korea for injury treatment and tryouts. It was at a local football gathering in Daejeon that he met his future wife (B). While B had been practicing her faith at the Shincheonji Daejeon Church since 2006, A naturally joined her in 2015 after learning the Bible's teachings. For both, the Word-centered faith—which strictly emphasizes love and harmony—became the bedrock ...

Shincheonji Volunteer Group Yeosu Branch Promotes 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo During Lunar New Year Holiday

During the 2026 Lunar New Year (Seollal) holiday, volunteers from the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Yeosu Branch conducted an on-site promotional campaign for the upcoming 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, engaging directly with holiday travelers and local merchants at the Yeosu Coastal Passenger Terminal.

The outreach took place on the morning of February 14, the first day of the Seollal holiday period, as thousands of passengers traveled to nearby islands to reunite with family.

On-Site Promotion at Yeosu Coastal Passenger Terminal

The Yeosu Coastal Passenger Terminal operates regular ferry routes to major islands including Geomundo, Yeondo, Hamgumi, and Dunbyeong.

According to the Yeosu Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, approximately 20,000 travelers were expected to use the terminal during the holiday period. Additional safety personnel were deployed throughout the terminal to manage increased passenger traffic.

Amid the busy atmosphere, volunteers dressed in traditional Korean hanbok approached travelers to offer New Year greetings. Along with the greeting “Happy New Year,” they distributed small gift pouches containing air fresheners and hand warmers printed with promotional messages for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, scheduled for September.

Approximately 200 gift sets were distributed during the campaign.

Engaging Travelers Through Conversation

Volunteers initiated light conversations with passengers, asking whether they were aware that Yeosu will host the world’s first World Island Expo later this year.

One traveler, Lim Seong-hee (42, Suncheon), who was waiting to board a ferry to Yeondo, expressed excitement about both the holiday and the upcoming international event. She stated that she felt proud that a global expo would be held in Yeosu and hoped it would be successful.

Passersby responded positively to the hanbok-clad volunteers, offering words of encouragement such as “Yeosu Island Expo, fighting!” and “Wishing for a successful event.”

Outreach to Local Markets and Small Businesses

Following the terminal campaign, volunteers visited approximately 30 nearby seafood markets, dried fish shops, fruit vendors, and local businesses in the surrounding area.

Shop owners received New Year greetings along with the same promotional gift pouches and hand warmers.

A long-time dried seafood merchant who has operated for 40 years shared hopes that the expo would help revitalize the local economy and attract more visitors to Yeosu.

Kim Choong-gil, head of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Yeosu Branch, stated that the campaign aimed to wish citizens safe travel during the holiday while continuing steady promotion efforts ahead of the September event. He added that the branch plans to continue both promotional campaigns and environmental cleanup activities throughout the year in support of the expo’s success.

About the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo

The 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo is scheduled to take place from September 5 to November 4, 2026.

Main venues:

  • Jinnam District, Dolsan (main event site)

  • Gaedo and Geumodo (sub-event sites)

The expo is expected to involve participation from 30 island-holding countries and will explore themes related to the ecological, historical, and cultural value of islands, as well as their future development potential. The Yeosu Branch has been conducting promotional campaigns and environmental cleanup activities in support of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo since 2024.

Community-Based Promotion Ahead of the Global Event

The Seollal campaign at the ferry terminal reflects a localized, face-to-face promotional approach aimed at increasing public awareness before the international event.

Through traditional greetings, small gifts, and direct engagement with both travelers and merchants, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Yeosu Branch continues its efforts to support the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo.
