The "40-Step Village": A Place Frozen in Time

In Sokcho, there is a place called the "40-Step Village." Formed by refugees during the Korean War, its steep slopes and narrow alleys make daily life a challenge for its elderly residents. Here, something as simple as ordering a single bowl of noodles is nearly impossible, as delivery services often refuse to climb the exhausting incline.


The "Pink Bundle" of Hope

On Parents' Day (May 8th), the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Sokcho Branch didn't let the steep stairs stop them. Under their signature "Pink Bojagi (Pink Bundle)" initiative, volunteers hand-carried warm pots of Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken Soup) to 12 households of seniors living alone.


More Than Just a Meal: A Heartfelt Connection

The soup was carefully wrapped in beautiful pink fabric, shaped like a flower. But the most moving gift was the handmade carnation brooches.

  • Tears of Gratitude: One 73-year-old resident, Hong, moved the volunteers to tears. She shared that she tried to order food with money sent by her children, but was told a single order couldn't be delivered to her location. "Having you bring this homemade soup and pinning this flower on me... it makes me so happy," she said.

  • A Lasting Bond: This wasn't their first visit. The connection began last Lunar New Year, and the residents now recognize the volunteers as "the kind people in pink."


Filling the Gaps in Community Care

The Sokcho Branch’s mission is to reach the places where administrative or commercial services fail to go. By climbing the "40 steps" themselves, the volunteers ensured that no senior felt forgotten on a day meant for celebrating parents.

A Commitment to "Dong-haeng" (Walking Together)

As the volunteers descended the hill with empty hands but full hearts, they promised to return. The Shincheonji Volunteer Group remains dedicated to these consistent, small-scale visits that create a massive impact on the lives of our community's most vulnerable members.

As winter settles in and the year comes to a close, many people begin to feel the cold more deeply—especially seniors living alone, neighbors with disabilities, and those who have served the nation. To bring warmth and comfort to these communities, graduates of Zion Christian Mission Center Class 116 from both the Andre Tribe and the Peter Tribe stepped forward for a special act of love: kimchi sharing.
