Proactive Flood Mitigation in Commercial Districts

Ahead of the summer monsoon season and localized heavy downpours, blocked drainage infrastructure poses a direct threat to low-lying urban sectors and local businesses. Accumulated debris, such as soil, leaves, and cigarette butts, often obstructs stormwater flow, leading to preventable street inundations. To address these vulnerabilities, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Busan Dongbu Branch executed a targeted disaster prevention and environmental initiative on May 30th. Operating under the flagship environmental framework "Nature, Be Green!" (Jayeon-ah Pureuja), the operation was staged throughout the Beomil-dong area in Dong-gu, Busan.

Intensive Drainage Maintenance: 150 Liters of Obstructions Removed

The physical operation targeted a high-density commercial zone in Beomil-dong known for high foot traffic and localized flood risks:

  • Route Coverage: A total of 41 mobilized volunteers systematically checked and cleared rainwater grates and storm drains spanning a 4-kilometer section.

  • Technical Maintenance: Volunteers opened manhole covers to extract deeply embedded silt, leaves, and synthetic litter that compromise urban drainage capacity.

  • Volume Collected: The branch successfully removed approximately 150 liters of discarded waste, significantly decreasing potential backflow risks for neighboring storefronts.

A merchant operating in Beomil-dong expressed immediate relief, noting, "Every year during heavy rains, I worried about water rising up into my shop. Seeing the volunteers thoroughly clean deep inside the drainage systems brings peace of mind."


Public Environmental Docent Program and Upcycled Resource Distribution

Parallel to the physical labor, the branch managed an educational campaign hub in front of the KB Kookmin Bank in Beomil-dong to raise civic awareness regarding urban waste:

  • Eco-Docent Program: The booth hosted an environmental docent session for 42 participating citizens, utilizing visual materials to illustrate how improperly discarded cigarette filters degrade into microplastics, impacting marine ecosystems and food safety. The session explicitly linked littering to storm drain blockages and subsequent urban flash floods.

  • Resource Circulation Initiative: To practically demonstrate upcycling, the branch distributed 50 eco-friendly whale-shaped toothpaste squeezers manufactured entirely from recycled plastic bottle caps, alongside 120 cups of iced coffee to the commuting public.


Sustained Civil Action for Community Safety

The Busan Dongbu Branch emphasized that preventing monsoon damage relies heavily on timely, preemptive maintenance before heavy rainfall begins. A representative from the branch stated that the organization remains committed to executing diverse, regular volunteer programs—including forest fire prevention and resource circulation campaigns—to safeguard regional infrastructure and elevate ecological awareness among city residents.
