Raising Eco-Awareness: Shincheonji Yangsan Branch Executes Environmental Campaign for World Environment Day
Promoting Conscious Consumerism in Local Communities
The unchecked consumption of single-use plastics and disposable items poses a long-term threat to regional ecosystems due to their extensive decomposition periods. To address this issue and foster a culture of carbon neutrality, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Yangsan Branch hosted a public awareness campaign in Nambu-dong, Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, on June 5th, in observance of World Environment Day. Operating under the flagship environmental project "Nature, Be Green!" (Jayeon-ah Pureuja), the initiative aimed to inform residents about the environmental impacts of daily waste and encourage voluntary plastic reduction.
Public Engagement and Distribution of Biodegradable Alternatives
The street campaign took place for two hours, starting at 3:00 PM, near the promenade opposite the Daiso station in Nambu-dong.
Statistical Outreach: The branch engaged 97 local citizens who directly participated in the educational programs, while approximately 200 commuters indirectly received the campaign's ecological messages.
Environmental Messaging: Volunteers emphasized the severe environmental toll of plastic containers and vinyl bags, which require over 500 years to decompose. The group actively promoted the daily utilization of personal tumblers and reusable shopping bags, sharing official environmental ministry messages regarding the cumulative impact of reducing a single disposable cup each day.
Alternative Resource Education: To shift consumer perceptions toward sustainable alternatives, the branch distributed biodegradable toothbrushes manufactured from cornstarch components to the participants, introducing them to practical substitutes for conventional plastic products.
Positive Public Responses and Institutional Plans
The interactive nature of the street campaign elicited diverse reactions from the local community:
Citizen Feedback: Participating residents and youths expressed strong curiosity regarding the physical traits of biodegradable resins. Several citizens voiced agreement with the necessity of reducing single-use plastics, sharing that they already utilize personal tumblers in their daily lives.
Future Initiatives: Lee Jae-bong, the Branch Head of the Yangsan Branch, outlined the group's long-term operational plans, stating that the branch intends to systematically organize relay street campaigns and regular environmental purification operations. The representative emphasized the commitment to establishing a stable culture of eco-friendly consumption within the local community through diverse public interest programs.
