Strategic Disaster Prevention: Shincheonji Uijeongbu Branch Clears Drainage Systems Ahead of Monsoon Season
Proactive Response to Recurring Flood Risks
As the rainy season approaches, localized heavy rains pose a significant threat to residential areas with aging infrastructure. The Ganeung-dong area near Baekseokcheon Stream in Uijeongbu has a history of vulnerability, having suffered substantial property damage in July 2024 and 2019 when rising stream levels caused water to back up into semi-basement homes. To prevent a recurrence of such disasters, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Uijeongbu Branch executed a preemptive safety and environmental improvement operation on May 23rd.
Technical Maintenance of Critical Drainage Infrastructure
The operation focused on high-risk sectors where blocked conduits often lead to severe localized flooding.
Infrastructure Cleaning: 16 volunteers performed intensive cleaning of rainwater grates and storm drains, removing accumulated debris and litter that obstruct water flow.
Safety Audits: The team inspected drainage facilities and flood-prevention equipment to ensure operational readiness for peak rainfall.
Public Education: Beyond physical labor, the branch provided safety guidelines and flood prevention protocols to approximately 300 local residents to enhance community resilience.
Restoring Peace of Mind to Vulnerable Residents
The initiative provided significant relief to residents who have previously experienced the trauma of indoor flooding.
Resident Testimony: Lee Cheol-su (72, alias), a semi-basement resident who lost appliances and clothing during the 2024 floods, expressed his gratitude. He noted that since blocked grates accelerated the flooding back then, the proactive cleaning by the volunteers gave him confidence that he would not suffer the same fate this year.
Community Impact: Another resident, Seo Ae-ja (67, alias), highlighted the difficulty of elderly residents maintaining these grates themselves and shared that the volunteer efforts significantly reduced her anxiety regarding the upcoming summer.
A Commitment to Seasonal Safety Continuity
The Uijeongbu Branch emphasized that disaster prevention is not a one-time event but a seasonal necessity. A representative stated their commitment to conducting regular maintenance so that residents no longer have to live in fear during every monsoon season. This initiative stands as a prime example of how civic volunteerism can fill critical gaps in urban safety and disaster preparedness.
