Safeguarding Senior Patriots Amid Extreme Seasonal Heatwaves

With global meteorological agencies warning of unprecedented summer heatwaves, protecting the health and living conditions of vulnerable elderly citizens has become a major regional safety priority. This necessity is particularly acute for Korean War veterans in their 80s and 90s, who often face physical limitations in managing household hygiene and seasonal preparation. To express civic gratitude and offer direct health support, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Wonju Branch executed its specialized "Wise Summer Living" outreach project on July 18th, targeting Korean War veterans and their families in Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon State.

5:00 AM Preparation: 30 Portions of Freshly Prepared Samgyetang

The nutritional support initiative began early in the morning to ensure food safety and quality:

  • Early Morning Preparation: Starting at 5:00 AM, branch volunteers gathered to manually wash, prep, and simmer ingredients to cook approximately 30 portions of traditional Samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup).

  • Direct Presentation: The prepared meals were delivered directly to the Hoengseong-gun Korean War Veterans Association headquarters. Volunteer Park Hyeon-suk (47, female) reflected, "Thinking of the veteran seniors enjoying a healthy meal motivated us to prepare everything with deep sincerity from early morning. I am glad to offer even a small token of appreciation for their noble sacrifices."

  • Recipient Response: Baek Beom-se, the Chapter Head of the Hoengseong Korean War Veterans Association, expressed deep appreciation, noting how grateful the members were for the thoughtful seasonal support during the intense heat.


Comprehensive Sanitation and Home Maintenance for High-Risk Households

Moving beyond meal provision, the Wonju Branch conducted structural environmental maintenance to eliminate seasonal health hazards:

  • Association Office Cleaning: Volunteers thoroughly disinfected and cleaned air conditioning units, exhaust systems, and restroom facilities within the veterans association office to lower risk factors for seasonal illnesses.

  • Targeted Home Sanitation: Mobile teams visited the residences of elderly veterans living alone to perform intensive sanitation work. Volunteers disassembled and washed electric cooling fans, deep-cleaned and reorganized kitchen refrigerators, and cleared accumulated dust from high shelves and hard-to-reach floor spaces underneath furniture that senior residents cannot easily clean independently.


Building Sustainable Care Systems for Regional Veterans

The Wonju Branch emphasized that providing continuous safety nets for national defenders requires seasonal, tailor-made interventions rather than passive aid.
