Why Are Young People Turning to Scripture Again? Shincheonji Gwangju Church Revitalizes the Culture of "Reading Together"

In recent years, a distinct cultural phenomenon known as "Text Hip"—where reading and sharing deep texts is viewed as a trendy, meaningful lifestyle—has taken hold among the younger generation. According to the 2025 National Reading Survey by Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, reading rates among young adults in their 20s have visibly rebounded.

While young people are increasingly seeking quiet reflection and communal reading experiences, traditional churches are ironically witnessing a sharp decline in Bible engagement among their youth—sparking concerns over the future of faith inheritance.

Addressing this gap, the Gwangju Church of the Peter Tribe in the Shincheonji Church of Jesus is drawing significant attention for successfully building an authentic, youth-led culture centered on "Reading Together."


Beyond Solitude: A Community Built Around the Word

According to a survey on young adults' perception of the church published by the Cultural Mission Institute, modern youth long for churches that provide "faithful scriptural guidance that offers genuine comfort and life direction."

In response to these spiritual needs, Shincheonji Gwangju Church operates structured, multi-faceted Bible programs, including full-text reading, daily devotionals (QT), verse transcription, and scripture memorization.

A flagship example is the "Revelation Morning Meditation and Memorization" program. Launched online in December 2021, it now operates every Thursday both online and offline, drawing an average of 4,500 young adults weekly. Rather than treating scripture as abstract doctrine, participants actively memorize and apply the Book of Revelation to their daily lives. Furthermore, the church has provided curated meditation guides to all members every Monday for over two and a half years, connecting biblical context directly to modern lifestyle challenges.

Restoring Connection in an Age of Isolation

The true strength of this initiative lies in its power to forge genuine human connection among young believers.

Kim Sang-min (35), a regular participant, shared: "Reading the Bible alone was always difficult to sustain. But reading it together made it a natural, enjoyable habit. Listening to how others apply the Word to their daily struggles allows me to reflect on my own inner self."

Another young member, Park Bo-hyun (29), highlighted the emotional support gained through the program: "Through sharing scripture, I found a authentic community where I can comfortably open up about my life. While reading the text is important, having people to process and share that text with has given me incredible strength."

A Sustainable Foundation for the Next Generation

As representative figures at Gwangju Church note, the ultimate goal of these gatherings is not merely tracking the volume of pages read, but cultivating a healthy ecosystem where faith grows alongside genuine fellowship.

By bridging the modern youth desire for "Text Hip" engagement with the timeless tradition of communal Bible study, Shincheonji is demonstrating that when churches provide a clear, scripture-centric foundation, young people will naturally gather, reflect, and build a vibrant future together.
