Teaching Gratitude on Police Day: How Shincheonji Sokcho Church Children Express Thanks to Local Officers

Ahead of South Korea’s Police Day (October 21) , the Children’s Department ( Yunyeonhoe ) of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Philip Tribe (Sokcho Church) , held a special character-building activity during Sunday service on October 18, 2026, focused on learning gratitude for public safety officers. The initiative helped young children understand the daily sacrifices of police officers who protect local neighborhoods and taught them how to express sincere appreciation through heartfelt letters and colorful artwork. Eye-Level Education: Understanding Public Safety During the service, a guest instructor from the church PR department delivered an interactive lesson tailored to children. The lesson explained the daily duties of police officers—such as night patrols and community safety—and taught practical emergency responses, including how to call 112. Beyond the Heat: How 2,600+ Volunteers Supported 16,000 People Across South Korea This Summer

Wrapping Up the 2-Month "Wise Summer Life" Campaign: Shincheonji Volunteer Group Delivered Over 15,000 Heatwave Items, Supported Outdoor Workers, and Care-Checked Korean War Veterans

💬 "Cleaning my dusty fan on such a scorching day felt like finding an oasis in the middle of a desert."

— Kim Sang-muk (96), Korean War Veteran

During the blistering summer of 2026, prolonged heatwaves swept across South Korea. According to Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) data, heat-related illnesses exceeded 3,800 cases nationwide between mid-May and late August.

To combat this extreme weather, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group conducted its nationwide heatwave relief campaign, "Wise Summer Life," running for two full months from June 16 to August 14.

With 2,633 volunteers stepping into streets, farms, and homes, the initiative reached 16,779 beneficiaries and engaged 16,232 participating citizens.

Reaching Outdoor Workers and Vulnerable Citizens

While last year’s initiative focused primarily on public street awareness, this year’s campaign actively expanded to outdoor workers—such as delivery drivers and market vendors—who face high risks of heat stroke:

  • Hydration & Relief Supplies: Distributed 10,236 bottles of ice water and cold beverages, alongside 5,542 cooling items (cooling arm sleeves, towels, and saline glucose tablets).

  • Targeted Regional Outreach:

    • Hanam Branch: Visited Hanam Poongsan Station, barefoot walking trails, and water parks to provide delivery workers with 100 bottles of ice water and glucose candies.

    • Daegu, Cheonan, Gwangju, Yeosu, and Mokpo: Distributed cooling supplies to over 5,000 citizens in busy hubs like Paldal Market and Cheonan Bus Terminal.

    • Incheon Branch: Hosted haircutting/grooming services and heatwave safety education at local senior centers in Bupyeong-gu.

Rural Agricultural Support and Coastal Preservation

The summer campaign extended beyond urban centers into agricultural and coastal communities facing seasonal labor shortages and ecological pressure:

  • Agricultural Assistance (Okcheon, Chungbuk): Volunteers helped local farmers install pepper plant supports and harvest 1,000 stalks of corn, relieving peak farming stress.

  • Coastal Plogging (Palmi-do, Incheon): The West Incheon and Gyeyang branches partnered with the Marine Sea Saving Movement, mobilizing 200 volunteers and citizens for a coastal plogging cleanup on Palmi-do Island.

Honor & Care for Living Legends: Veterans Outreach

Starting in June (Patriots and Veterans Month), the campaign seamlessly transitioned into home-visit care for elderly Korean War veterans:

  • Home Cooling Maintenance: Volunteers visited veterans' homes to clean dusty air conditioner filters and electric fans, and installed sun-blocking curtains.

  • Nutritional & Living Support: Delivered 176 servings of Samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) and 218 sets of traditional ramie/linen summer bedding.

  • Civic Memory Campaigns: Hosted interactive public exhibitions at Boramae Park (Seoul), Deogyang-gu Office (Goyang), and Yeongildae Beach (Pohang). Citizens wrote 1,188 heartfelt thank-you letters, which were delivered alongside 52 custom framed longevity portraits.

A Spirit of Unconditional Service

Summarizing the two-month effort, an official representative from Shincheonji Volunteer Group stated:

"Through this two-month nationwide campaign, we were able to address two vital needs simultaneously: midsummer heatwave prevention for vulnerable groups and heartfelt honor for our national veterans. Moving forward, we will continue to put into practice the teaching to share freely with our neighbors."
