From Street Messages to Warm Meals: How Seoul and Incheon Honored War Heroes Amid Heatwaves

Shincheonji Volunteer Group Namsan and Juan Branches Paired Heatwave Relief for Citizens with Nourishing Samgyetang Meals and Hand-Written Letters for Korean War Veterans

As late summer heatwaves swept across South Korea, two regional branches of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group—Namsan (Seoul) and Juan (Incheon)—launched synchronized civic honor campaigns.

By engaging everyday citizens on the street and visiting veterans in person, volunteers bridged generations, turning midsummer heat relief into a meaningful movement of national gratitude.

Namsan Branch (Seoul): Nourishing Meals and 100 Citizen Letters in Yongsan

On August 26, the Namsan Branch visited the Yongsan-gu Veterans Hall to meet members of the Korean War Veterans Association Yongsan Chapter.

Building on their primary campaign held at Seoul Plaza on August 17, volunteers brought both physical nourishment and heartfelt community messages:

  • Nutritious Meals: Delivered 35 servings of fresh Samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) to help elderly veterans maintain stamina against lingering humidity.

  • 100 Letters of Respect: Handed over 100 personal thank-you letters written directly by Seoul citizens during public awareness events.

  • 6-Year Partnership: This visit marked the 11th joint sharing outreach with the Yongsan Veterans Chapter since their continuous partnership began in 2020.

An official from the Namsan Branch shared: "We hope this small token offers comfort to our veterans while encouraging everyday citizens to reflect on the true meaning of patriotism."



Juan Branch (Incheon): Street Hydration & Citizen Memory Campaign

On August 27 in Incheon, 17 volunteers from the Juan Branch took to the bustling streets near Poonglim Intersection in Ganseok-dong, Namdong-gu.

The volunteers targeted both public health during extreme weather and civic memory:

  • Heatwave Safety Outreach: Distributed 43 bottles of ice-cold water and guided passersby on heatstroke prevention, such as avoiding outdoor activities during peak hours.

  • Citizen Gratitude Booth: Invited 36 citizens to write personal messages of respect to 6·25 veterans on site, gifting cooling neck scarves to all participants.

One participating citizen reflected: "I've always been grateful to our war heroes, but writing it down in my own words made me realize the depth of their sacrifice all over again."


A Living Tradition of Civic Honor

Whether serving hot soup in Seoul or handing out iced water and gratitude cards on the streets of Incheon, these dual campaigns highlight a unified mission: bringing war veterans' sacrifices into the hearts of modern citizens.

As Lee Hwang-joo, Branch Manager of the Juan Branch, stated:

"We wanted citizens weary from the heat wave to cool off while taking a moment to remember those who sacrificed for our nation. We will continue working alongside our local communities to keep this spirit of gratitude alive."
