From Waste to Wonders: Guri-Namyangju Volunteers Turn Dasan Station into a Hub for Upcycling and Green Education

In celebration of Resource Recycling Day (September 6 annually), the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Guri-Namyangju Branch turned the bustling Dasan Station into a temporary hub for climate action.

On September 5, at the exit 4 of Dasan Station in Namyangju, volunteers launched a dedicated community awareness campaign designed to show that waste reduction is not just necessary, but creative and accessible for every citizen.

The primary objective of this public outreach was to spread the true meaning behind Resource Recycling Day, which aims to boost civic interest in recycling waste materials and reduce everyday consumption.


Textile Trash to Net Bags: Hand-on Upcycling with "Yangsangmok"

The most engaging part of the event was the hands-on upcycling workshop. Citizens learned how to transform "Yangsangmok"—loops of waste textile scraps generated during the manufacturing of socks—into durable, net-style bottle bags.

Participants, ranging from children to adults, personally experienced the fascinating process of taking material destined for the landfill and turning it into a fashionable, practical household item. This direct involvement provided a powerful lesson on the circular economy.


Fun Learning for a Greener Tomorrow: Carbon Neutrality Quizzes

The event zone was dotted with educational displays and promotional materials explaining the vital necessity of resource conservation. However, rather than offering dry lectures, volunteers engaged citizens through a lively "Carbon Neutrality Quiz."

This quiz challenged participants to test their knowledge on everyday greenhouse gas reduction methods. Citizens of all ages paused their busy schedules to compete, learning while having fun:

  • Family Engagement: Children participated enthusiastically, learning about correct waste separation while competing with family members.

  • Daily Action: Citizens reviewed common pitfalls in daily separation and learned practical green habits to apply at home.


Community Voiced their Support

The campaign was received with high praise from local residents who felt inspired to make changes in their daily routines.

Ahn Eun-yeong (42, pseudonym), who attended with her children, shared:

"Taking the quiz with my children allowed us all to naturally learn common environmental sense, such as proper separation of waste. It was a great opportunity for our entire family to reflect on the practical necessity of small daily actions."
