Beyond the Festivities: Ensuring Pristine Event Grounds Through Pre- and Post-Festival Cleanups
Shincheonji Volunteer Group Partners with Regional Volunteer Centers Across Andong, Sokcho, Gyeongju, and Gongju to Support Successful Local Festivals
Local festivals rely not only on grand celebrations but also on the quiet dedication required to maintain them. Across South Korea, volunteer organizations have been working hand-in-hand with local welfare centers to tidy up event grounds before celebrations begin and clean up remaining waste after the crowds depart.
The Shincheonji Volunteer Group has implemented this collaborative approach, tailoring environmental cleanup efforts to the unique needs and schedules of regional festivals.
Pre-Festival Prep: Welcoming Visitors with Clean Environments
Before major regional events opened to the public, local branches stepped in to tidy up venues and streets to ensure a pleasant visitor experience:
Andong International Maskdance Festival: On September 23, 2026, 22 volunteers from the Andong Branch joined the Andong Volunteer Center for the "National Cleanliness Day." They cleared a 500-meter stretch from the Maskdance Park to the Andong Gymnasium, collecting 75 liters of municipal waste.
Sokcho Displaced Persons Cultural Festival: Ahead of the 11th festival held June 12–13, the Sokcho Branch conducted environmental cleanups around the Sokcho Expo Lawn Plaza, preparing the venue for incoming tourists.
APEC Gyeongju Preparation: Ahead of international events, approximately 50 volunteers from the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Joint Federation joined the Gyeongju Volunteer Center's "APEC Citizen Volunteer Group Welcome Cleanup Day" on October 22 of last year. They cleared parks and nearby roads behind the Gyeongju Indoor Gymnasium, collecting about 200 liters of waste.
A Gyeongju Volunteer Center official noted at the time: "We deeply appreciate those who volunteered despite the inclement weather. We will continue working with citizens to build a safe and pleasant environment."
Post-Festival Cleanup: Clearing 3,750 Liters of Waste at Baekje Cultural Festival
While pre-event preparation welcomes visitors, post-festival management is equally critical to restoring local neighborhoods.
Following the opening ceremony of the Baekje Cultural Festival on October 4, the Gongju Branch mobilized 200 volunteers for a major cleanup operation around the Geumgang Riverside and surrounding festival zones. Working from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM, volunteers utilized 50 large 75-liter trash bags provided by the Gongju City government to collect a total of 3,750 liters of waste left behind by large crowds.
Reflecting on the effort, a local site observer shared: "There was so much waste that cleanup was difficult, and we are truly grateful for the help. We hope they can join us often during festival periods."
Sustaining Community Environments Together
Effective festival management requires both proactive preparation and responsible cleanup. By coordinating with regional volunteer centers and local administrations, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group continues to support community events, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can enjoy clean, well-maintained public spaces.
