Clearing Drainage Channels Before Heavy Rains: 226 Volunteers Prepare Tanzania for Rainy Season

Ahead of Expected November Heavy Rainfall, Shincheonji Volunteer Group Tanzania Chapter Mobilized 226 Volunteers Across Mwanyanyamala, Gongolamboto, and Kahama to Prevent Flooding and Clean Hospital Grounds

💬 "I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve as a light in our local community and provide practical, hands-on help to our fellow citizens."

— Steven Philemon Shafa (31), Volunteer Resident from Dar es Salaam

Ahead of the heavy rainy season starting in November, proactive community measures took place across Tanzania to protect residents from flood risks and water contamination.

On October 17 and 24, 2026 (local time), the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Tanzania Chapter (led by Chapter Head Park Min) organized extensive pre-rainy season environmental cleanups across three key regions: Mwanyanyamala, Gongolamboto, and Kahama.

Clearing Drainage Blockages Ahead of El Niño-Driven Rains

The outreach was organized in direct response to weather advisories issued by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA):

  • TMA Weather Forecast: In its August seasonal outlook, TMA warned that El Niño conditions could bring normal to above-normal rainfall between October and December, particularly along the northern coast and the Lake Victoria basin. The agency cautioned against potential flooding, waterlogging, and water contamination starting in November.

  • Tackling Flood Hazards: When debris, mud, and sand accumulate in drainage channels, rainwater cannot flow freely, significantly increasing flood risks for surrounding residential neighborhoods and facilities.

  • Mobilizing 226 Volunteers: A total of 226 volunteers cleared accumulated mud, rocks, sand, and litter from drainage channels, while also weeding surrounding areas to facilitate smooth water runoff during heavy rains.

Sanitizing Hospital Grounds & Partnering for Blood Donation Drives

In addition to drainage clearance, volunteers focused efforts on local health facilities:

  • Hospital Environment Cleanups: Volunteers cleaned surrounding hospital grounds and gathered scattered waste to maintain a hygienic environment for visiting patients before the rains set in.

  • Blood Donation Request: Seeing the team's dedicated work on-site, a local hospital official highlighted a critical shortage of blood supplies for patients and requested the Tanzania Chapter to launch a blood donation campaign.

  • Future Cooperation Plans: In response, the Tanzania Chapter announced plans to roll out blood donation drives across Dar es Salaam and establish formal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with relevant health authorities to build a long-term framework for service cooperation.

Practical Local Partnerships for Community Safety

A representative from the Tanzania Chapter stated: "We hope that clearing the drainage systems and sanitizing hospital grounds helps residents live in a safer, more comfortable environment. Moving forward, we will continue to partner with local governments and community organizations to deliver practical assistance."

By clearing water channels before floods strike and building medical support partnerships, volunteers in Tanzania demonstrated how timely, action-oriented community outreach can protect local lives and infrastructure.
