Teaching Gratitude on Police Day: How Shincheonji Sokcho Church Children Express Thanks to Local Officers

Ahead of South Korea’s Police Day (October 21) , the Children’s Department ( Yunyeonhoe ) of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Philip Tribe (Sokcho Church) , held a special character-building activity during Sunday service on October 18, 2026, focused on learning gratitude for public safety officers. Embracing New Challenges at 80: How Shincheonji Incheon Church Empowers Seniors Through Taekwondo, Choir, and Table Tennis

In a rapidly aging society, finding active and fulfilling social engagement in one's golden years has become an essential aspect of health and happiness. According to the '2023 Senior Living Survey' by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, only 6.6% of Korean seniors actively participate in club activities.

To bridge this gap during Senior Citizens' Month, Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Matthew Tribe (Incheon Church), is offering structured learning programs—including Silver Taekwondo, a Silver Choir, and Table Tennis classes—empowering over 60 elderly members to stay active, healthy, and connected.

Kicking Away Age Barriers: Silver Taekwondo at 81

For 81-year-old Kim Geum-bok, wearing a Taekwondo uniform for the first time in September 2025 felt daunting. Today, she faithfully attends training every Tuesday, practicing basic stances, poomsae, and kicks.

"At first, my body felt stiff, but gradually I gained flexibility and muscle strength," Kim shared cheerfully. "Since starting Taekwondo, my appetite has improved, and I sleep much better at night."

Harmony and Friendship: Choir and Table Tennis

In addition to martial arts, Incheon Church supports two other flourishing senior clubs:

  • Silver Choir (Launched Feb 2026): Over 20 seniors practice vocalization every Saturday, preparing for a year-end performance. Member Park Yeong-suk (75) noted: "I’ve loved singing since I was young, and I am so grateful for the chance to learn again in my seventies."

  • Table Tennis Class (Launched May 2026): Meeting every Friday, members build physical endurance while fostering warm friendships. Kim Ok-hee (76) added: "Helping each other practice brought us closer together. I eagerly look forward to Fridays."

Creating Spaces for Continuous Growth

Incheon Church Director Lee Seok-goo stated: "Celebrating seniors goes beyond presenting gifts; it means creating spaces where they can actively learn and take on new challenges. We will continue providing facilities and instructors so our elders can enjoy sports and music."

By transforming senior care from passive support into active learning, Shincheonji Incheon Church continues to demonstrate that age is no barrier to living a vibrant, joyful life.
