Teaching Gratitude on Police Day: How Shincheonji Sokcho Church Children Express Thanks to Local Officers

Ahead of South Korea’s Police Day (October 21) , the Children’s Department ( Yunyeonhoe ) of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Philip Tribe (Sokcho Church) , held a special character-building activity during Sunday service on October 18, 2026, focused on learning gratitude for public safety officers. Hands That Defended the Nation Now Sweep the Streets: Veterans and Youth Clean Gangseo Together

On October 16, 2026, 24 Vietnam War Veterans and 12 Volunteers from Shincheonji Volunteer Group Gangseo Branch Gathered at Balsan Station for Their Second Monthly Joint Street Cleanup

💬 "It was a deeply moving experience to clean the streets alongside those who protected our country. It felt like expressing our gratitude in a truly tangible, personal way."

— Kim Yoon-gi (22), Youth Volunteer from Hwagok-dong

On October 16, 2026, around Exit 1 of Balsan Station in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, a unique partnership took to the sidewalks.

Men who dedicated their youth to foreign service during the Vietnam War stood shoulder-to-shoulder with young local volunteers. Together, members of the Gangseo Chapter of the Vietnam War Veterans Association and the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Gangseo Branch picked up brooms and trash tongs to care for their shared neighborhood streets.

A Second Monthly Gathering: Seamless Intergenerational Teamwork

This initiative marked the second joint cleanup following their initial collaboration last month. A total of 36 participants—24 Vietnam War veterans and 12 Gangseo Branch volunteers—participated in the effort:

  • Warm Reconnection: Kim Jin-soo, President of the Gangseo Chapter of the Veterans Association, arrived 30 minutes early to check on members. Having met the previous month, veterans and volunteers greeted each other warmly, making the distribution of gloves, dustpans, and tongs smooth and natural.

  • Coordinated Action: For about an hour under warm October weather, participants divided into teams to sweep street margins and clean outside local restaurants and shops, gathering fallen leaves, dust, and discarded waste.

  • Intergenerational Synergy: Teamwork formed naturally as veterans held dustpans while volunteers swept debris inside, or one participant held open heavy collection bags while another transferred gathered litter.

Shared Hopes for Expanding Local Volunteering

The collaborative experience left lasting impressions on both senior veterans and young volunteers alike:

  • Oh Myung-kyun (65), Veteran Resident: Expressed his joy in participating for the second time, stating: "Volunteering is truly enjoyable, and I hope more people join in. My dream and hope are to participate alongside even more volunteers in the future."

  • Kim Yoon-gi (22), Youth Volunteer: Reflected on the honor of working alongside national heroes, noting that bowing down to pick up trash together was a meaningful expression of respect for their past sacrifices.

Upon finishing the hour-long activity, participants exchanged words of encouragement and expressed gratitude for each other's time before packing up their tools.
