For decades, 77-year-old Kim Nam-sun walked through life with a quiet, heavy burden. Having lost her parents at an early age, she never had the opportunity to learn Hangul (the Korean alphabet).
Simple everyday tasks felt like insurmountable walls. Visiting a bank, filling out official documents, reading street signs, or checking bus routes required relying on the kindness of strangers. Even during her years attending traditional churches, carrying a Bible felt bittersweet: whenever the pastor cited a verse, someone sitting next to her had to open the page for her.
Yet, at the age of 60, a profound desire awakened inside her: "I want to read and understand the Bible with my own eyes."
The Bible as a Primer: Learning Words Through God's Word
Kim’s turning point came when she began studying the Bible at the Zion Christian Mission Center through her child, a member of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Gwangju Church.
Fascinated by the systematic teachings, she found the Word "sweeter than honey." She attended lectures morning and evening. During an era when teachings were recorded on cassette tapes, Kim opened her Bible, listened to the recordings, and read entire sentences out loud repeatedly.
Instead of starting with basic consonants and vowels, Kim used the Book of Revelation as her textbook. Listening to lectures on Revelation Chapter 1 over and over, she gradually unlocked words and sentences.
"As each letter came into focus and words started to make sense, it was truly miraculous," Kim recalled with a smile. "Attending worship and reading became a journey filled with overwhelming joy."
Reclaiming Independence and Deepening Faith
Unlocking literacy transformed both her daily life and her spiritual journey:
Daily Freedom: She could finally read street signs, verify bus destinations independently, and handle administrative matters without relying on others.
Active Spiritual Growth: Today, Kim is personally handwriting (transcribing) the entire Book of Revelation. She is also studying diligently to take the church's upcoming "Heavenly Kingdom Exam" (Level 1) in November 2026.
Family Perspective Shift: Initially, her other children were deeply concerned when she joined Shincheonji Church. However, seeing their mother learn to read, write, and transcribe Scripture with newfound confidence turned their worry into admiration and heartfelt support.
A Message of Hope for Every Generation
Reflecting on her journey, Kim offers a warm message of encouragement to anyone hesitant to start something new late in life: "There is nothing you cannot do just because you are older. It’s challenging at first, but if you take it one step at a time, you can do it. I started at age 60."
On Hangul Day—a holiday celebrating the creation of Korea's alphabet—Kim’s story stands as a beautiful testament to human resilience. By offering clear, systematic Scripture education, Shincheonji Church not only quenched her spiritual thirst but also gave her the gift of reading the world around her.
