Bridging the Generational Gap: Shincheonji Seodaemun Church Restores Family and Community Connections

In an increasingly fast-paced digital world, generational gaps and declining family satisfaction have become significant social challenges in South Korea. According to Statistics Korea’s 2024 Social Survey, the percentage of citizens who report feeling satisfied with their family relationships dropped to 63.5% (a 1.0% decrease from two years prior). Crucially, the data revealed a steep perceptual divide: while 80.8% of those under 20 felt satisfied, only 55.0% of seniors aged 60 and over echoed that sentiment. To address this deepening emotional isolation, the Seodaemun Church of the Simon Tribe of Shincheonji launched a structured "Intergenerational Buddy Program" during the Month of Families, creating a unique space for open dialogue, mutual respect, and emotional healing. Creating Three Axis of Generational Connection Rather than hosting a typical one-way event, the Seodaemun Church intentionally paired its six internal departments into three distinct, cross-generational ...

[Book] Oriental Classics - The Analects of Confucius

《學而- Studying and Practicing》

子曰:「學而時習之,不亦說乎?」

The Master said, "Is it not pleasant to learn with a constant perseverance and application?"

I believe that Classics give a lot of insights to life as classics are accumulation of older generation.

Considering the fact that insights give by the past generation applies the same to this very day, maybe the essence of the life and value related to life do not change.

What I learned from the first chapter of the Analects is that learning is not equal to practicing. Up until now, I think I delude myself into a pretense that I can practice something simply because I learned it.

However, the Master is teaching me that

- learning is understanding the knowledge

whereas

- practicing is constantly trying out and applying what one has learned.

With the development of technology, we get so much information and knoweldge these days. However, that does not mean that all of that information is mine unless I practice it.

There are two important thing related to learning and practicing.

One, even if it is a very tiny small thing, we need to actually practice and apply to our life daily so that what we learned can be part of us eventually.

Two, we may fail to completely apply what we learned. However, we should not give up. Part of learning is failing and we need to learn how to enjoy the dissapointment. That is where constant perseverance comes. I think the Master already knew that there are may failures and disappointments in applying the knowledge to real life and that is why he added the phrase "constant perseverance."

After reading this, I thought that I don't need to learn more but what I actually need to practicing and applying what I have learned so far.

What are something small that you would like to apply to your life so that it may become a good habbit to you and change your life at the end?

Let's do a baby step everyday!
