UN Human Rights Council Receives Petition on Minorities in South Korea

What began as a domestic legal dispute in South Korea has officially reached the global stage. CAP LC, a prominent international human rights NGO holding special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), has submitted a formal written statement to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The petition voices growing international alarm over institutional discrimination, social stigma, and the erosion of due process affecting minority groups, specifically focusing on the recent treatment of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus.  Active and Joyful Senior Life! Enhancing Well-being Through Faith and Community

Faith and Fulfillment in Later Life

As South Korea becomes a super-aged society, more seniors are prioritizing their health and happiness. Studies show that religious involvement can significantly enhance happiness in old age. In Gangwon Province, where over 25% of the population is 65 or older, many are discovering a renewed sense of purpose through faith and community engagement.

Within this vibrant community, members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, particularly the Philip Tribe’s Advisory Committee, are embracing faith-driven activities that bring joy, fulfillment, and a deep sense of connection.

Community, Culture, and Wellness

The Philip Tribe fosters senior engagement through diverse programs, helping members stay active, learn new skills, and build meaningful connections.

Creativity and Companionship

Kwon Young-sook (68, Chuncheon) shares, “Macramé has reignited my passion for creativity. It gives me a sense of accomplishment, eliminates loneliness, and brings peace.” The church also offers hand massage, knitting, health exercises, and scam prevention education to support holistic well-being.

Physical and Social Well-being

Jo Ye-bum (72, Gangneung) finds renewal in barefoot walking and crochet, saying, “These activities strengthen my body and spirit, adding vibrancy to my daily life.” Meanwhile, the Gangneung Church’s “Family Support Room” provides a supportive space for members to navigate challenges together, and Cheongpyeong Church hosts craft workshops and fellowship events to foster unity and belonging.

Finding Purpose

Lee Soon-ok (74, Namyangju) expresses gratitude: “Faith has given me peace and hope for heaven. Crafting brings me joy and a sense of achievement. I am truly thankful to God.”

A Church Dedicated to Senior Happiness

Aging can bring physical limitations and isolation, but Shincheonji’s seniors are redefining later life with faith, purpose, and active participation.

A Philip Tribe representative affirms, “We will continue offering programs that support the physical and emotional well-being of our elderly members, ensuring a church where all generations find happiness in faith.”

Through faith, fellowship, and meaningful activities, the seniors of Shincheonji’s Philip Tribe are proving that aging is not about slowing down—it’s about thriving.
