International Concern Grows Over South Korea's Detention of 95-Year-Old Religious Leader

The recent detention and prosecution of Chairman Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old leader of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, has sparked intense scrutiny from international human rights and religious freedom organizations. Legal experts and sociologists worldwide are raising critical questions regarding South Korea’s adherence to global human rights standards and the principle of state neutrality. The Controversy Surrounding the Detention On June 24, 2026, South Korean authorities took Chairman Lee into custody on charges related to the Political Parties Act, followed by a formal indictment on June 30. When Faith Meets Care: A Story of Growing Together

Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Bucheon (Bartholomew Tribe) recently held a meaningful campaign called “Naeri-sarang,” which means “love that flows downward.”

This kind of love is like how parents naturally care for their children. In the church, it means that those who have more experience in faith care for and support those who are newer or younger.

Since February, members of the church have been meeting in small groups to talk, listen, and support each other. These meetings helped people feel more connected and understood.

One young member said,
“I felt like watching a tree grow. I realized how important it is to wait for others and cheer them on as they grow in faith.”

Another member shared,
“The older members comforted us like big sisters or close friends. Because of their love, I felt encouraged and wanted to be more open and caring too.”

The campaign brought healing, comfort, and stronger relationships in the church. Many felt the love of Jesus through these sincere conversations. Because of the positive response, the campaign has been extended through May.

This is what Naeri-sarang looks like—love that comes from above and flows warmly to others.
