[Shincheonji Inside ①] How Shincheonji Is Making a Difference in Local Communities
In today’s world, it’s easy to overlook the quiet acts of kindness that bring real change. But across Korea and around the world, members of Shincheonji Church of Jesus have been quietly doing just that – bringing warmth, care, and love to those in need through hands-on volunteer work.
A Church That Cares: From Fire Recovery to Plogging
In the first half of 2025, Shincheonji Volunteer Groups from all 12 tribes carried out a wide range of community activities. These efforts weren’t just symbolic – they were practical, heartfelt, and focused on the everyday needs of people. From helping clean up after wildfires to picking up trash from rivers and streets, volunteers acted as good neighbors, walking alongside the community.
The largest campaign took place around Earth Day in April, with 23 cities in Korea and 32 international branches joining together for a week of climate action. Volunteers collected over 13,000 liters of trash, cleaned 121 kilometers of land, and held tree planting and upcycling activities for children. These efforts show that Shincheonji is not only a spiritual community but also one that actively cares for the Earth.
Walking with the Elderly and Veterans
In rural areas with many elderly residents, Shincheonji volunteers made regular visits to senior citizens who live alone or have difficulty moving. Through warm conversation, cleaning, and emotional support programs like craft-making, they offered comfort and connection. One 90-year-old veteran said, “I didn’t know a helping hand could feel this warm,” after receiving assistance cleaning his home.
In Yeosu, volunteers went even further by organizing special activities like dreamcatcher-making and gardening, which helped elderly participants open up and share stories about their past and their hopes.
Preparing for Rainy Season: Drain Cleaning and Stream Care
As Korea prepared for the rainy season, Shincheonji volunteers rolled up their sleeves again. In places like Uijeongbu and Namyangju, they cleaned drains, removed water plants blocking streams, and picked up trash in residential areas. Their goal was simple but meaningful: to prevent flooding and keep communities safe.
One citizen watching the effort said, “It’s really impressive to see a religious group care this much about the environment and our safety.”
A Quiet but Powerful Impact
While Shincheonji Church of Jesus has sometimes been misunderstood, what often goes unseen is the quiet service happening every week in cities and neighborhoods.
These acts of kindness—cleaning flood drains, supporting the elderly, picking up litter—are not for show. They come from a place of deep love for both God and neighbor.
This blog series was created to share these often-unnoticed stories of compassion and action. Because true faith doesn’t just stay in the heart—it shows up in our hands, in the way we serve others with sincerity and hope.
