Shincheonji Thaddaeus Tribe Opens Church Doors for 20 Years, Strengthening Community in Jeonju

The Shincheonji Thaddaeus Tribe (Doma Tribe) in Jeonju has continued a long-running community engagement initiative, keeping its church facilities open to local residents for nearly two decades. Located in Palbok-dong, Jeonju, the Shincheonji Thaddaeus Tribe Jeonju Church recently hosted another “Open Sanctuary” event, transforming its lobby into a welcoming space for neighborhood interaction. Residents gathered to enjoy busking performances, exchange handwritten message cards, and share tea in a relaxed setting. According to the church, the initiative is not a one-time event but part of a 20-year tradition of lowering physical and social barriers between religious facilities and the surrounding community. Shincheonji Chungju Church Brings Summer Joy to Seniors with Traditional Korean Music

While many families enjoy vacations during the summer holiday season, for elderly residents with limited mobility, travel can feel out of reach. To fill that gap, Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Chungju Congregation (led by Pastor Kim Young-gon) brought a warm gift of music and fellowship.

A Decade of “Sharing Happiness at the Table”

The performance was part of the ongoing “Sharing Happiness at the Table” program, hosted monthly by the non-profit Happy Angels. For the past 10 years, the initiative has invited around 100–150 seniors and vulnerable neighbors to enjoy a shared meal and companionship.

For the last eight consecutive years, volunteers from Chungju Church have faithfully participated—preparing and serving meals, cleaning up, and supplying essential goods. Each month, about 10 volunteers dedicate their time to ensure seniors feel cared for and connected.

A Special Summer Treat: Traditional Music Performance

This August, the Chungju branch decided to go beyond meal service. After serving food, they organized a special gugak (traditional Korean music) performance featuring the gayageum (zither), taepyeongso (traditional oboe), and hyangpiri (double-reed pipe).

The small dining hall of the Happy Angels office transformed into a lively concert space as melodies of “Beautiful Country,” “Niliriya,” and “Jinttobaegi” filled the air.

Seniors responded with bright smiles, clapping along, swaying their shoulders, and even getting up to dance.

Leaving Memories Like a Holiday

A church representative shared,

“We thought hard about what kind of special gift we could offer during the summer. For those unable to travel, we wanted this day to feel like a vacation filled with good memories.”

Through food, music, and heartfelt company, the Chungju Church volunteers gave seniors a day of laughter, rhythm, and togetherness—proving once again that the spirit of giving can turn an ordinary day into something truly memorable.
