Shincheonji Volunteer Group Clears 20 Tons of Marine Waste at Yeosu Manseongri Beach
On August 16, the Yeosu branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group mobilized over 200 volunteers to restore the coastline of Manseongri Black Sand Beach in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province. The cleanup effort came in response to a request from local authorities after heavy rains had washed massive amounts of marine debris into the area.
Responding to a Crisis After Heavy Rains
Recent torrential downpours carried large amounts of garbage into Yeosu Port and nearby beaches. Manseongri Beach, located at the mouth of the Seomjin River, was especially affected, with debris ranging from buoys, styrofoam, and driftwood to plastics and household waste. The sheer volume made it difficult for government agencies to handle the situation alone.
Answering the call, the Yeosu branch divided volunteers into teams and cleared the beach for more than two hours. By the end of the activity, they had collected an estimated 20 tons of waste.
Volunteers Share Their Experience
One volunteer, Ms. Kim Ji-ae (40s, Yeosu), reflected:
“There was so much waste that it felt endless. It made me realize how serious this problem is. Even though the heat was difficult, I endured it because I felt the joy of protecting the sea. I believe that if we reduce disposable products and practice proper recycling, these problems can be lessened.”
Tourists also expressed gratitude. Mr. Yoo Seok-hoon (30s, Daegu), who visited with his family, commented:
“This beach is one of Yeosu’s landmarks. Seeing volunteers working so hard in the hot weather was impressive. Thanks to them, the beach looks much cleaner, and I hope it continues to be maintained like this.”
Preparing for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo
A representative of the Yeosu branch explained that the cleanup was part of ongoing efforts to prepare for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, to be held from September 5 to November 4, 2026, under the theme “Islands: Connecting the Sea and the Future.”
“This activity is not just a one-time event. We will continue to work with the local government on various environmental projects leading up to the Expo.”
Beyond a Single Day of Service
The Yeosu branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group has been promoting environmental campaigns and public awareness activities for the success of the upcoming Expo since last year. Their work reflects a broader commitment to protecting the ocean and leaving a cleaner environment for both citizens and visitors.
With 20 tons of waste cleared in just one day, the volunteers’ effort shows how community-driven action can make a visible difference for both the environment and the people who enjoy it.
