UN Human Rights Council Receives Petition on Minorities in South Korea

What began as a domestic legal dispute in South Korea has officially reached the global stage. CAP LC, a prominent international human rights NGO holding special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), has submitted a formal written statement to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The petition voices growing international alarm over institutional discrimination, social stigma, and the erosion of due process affecting minority groups, specifically focusing on the recent treatment of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus. The Core Appeal: Decisions Must Be Based on Evidence, Not Stigma In its official submission to the UN, CAP LC shifted the focus away from internal theological controversies, choosing instead to address a more critical systemic issue: the objective standards of administrative and judicial justice. Shincheonji Cheongju Church Hosts Interfaith Harmony Lecture with Buddhist Leaders

On September 25, the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Matthias Tribe, Cheongju Church), together with the Korea Buddhist Clergy Association, held a joint interfaith lecture in Cheongju that brought together around 70 participants.

The event, themed around “Doctrines of Buddhism and Christianity,” offered a rare opportunity for dialogue between two traditions often seen as distinct. Leaders from both communities emphasized shared values of truth, peace, and compassion.

A Meeting of Teachings

The keynote lecture was delivered by Venerable Hyunsan, chairman of the Korea Buddhist Clergy Association, alongside Pastor Byun Jae-jun of Shincheonji Cheongju Church.

Venerable Hyunsan spoke on “The Book of Revelation Through the Eyes of Buddhism”, highlighting the importance of recognizing the fulfillment of prophecy and meeting the one who has witnessed its reality. He noted,

“Buddhism and Christianity may use different expressions, but both pursue truth and peace. I hope to see more opportunities to expand these encounters.”

Pastor Byun connected the Christian scripture with Buddhist principles such as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, underlining how both faiths seek to overcome suffering and point toward a path of life.

A Step Toward Peace and Respect

Attendees included civic leaders and community members who expressed deep appreciation for the dialogue. One participant shared:

“Hearing Buddhist and Christian leaders affirm common values of love and peace was deeply moving. I hope such meetings continue and contribute to harmony in society.”

The organizers emphasized that the event’s goal was not to merge doctrines, but to encourage mutual respect and interfaith cooperation. Going forward, Shincheonji Cheongju Church and its partners plan to host regular exchanges to promote peace in the region.

Pastor Byun reflected,

“Through this lecture, Buddhism and Christianity were able to respect each other’s teachings and share common values. We will continue such efforts to contribute to peace and harmony in our community.”

This interfaith gathering marks another step in the global effort to foster dialogue, mutual understanding, and the pursuit of peace across religious boundaries.
