UN Human Rights Council Receives Petition on Minorities in South Korea

What began as a domestic legal dispute in South Korea has officially reached the global stage. CAP LC, a prominent international human rights NGO holding special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), has submitted a formal written statement to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The petition voices growing international alarm over institutional discrimination, social stigma, and the erosion of due process affecting minority groups, specifically focusing on the recent treatment of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus. Shincheonji Seongnam Church Holds New Year Encouragement Event for Local Businesses

On January 4, 2026, Shincheonji Church of Jesus Seongnam Church, part of the John Tribe, held a New Year encouragement event to support local businesses in the Seongnam area.

After finishing their worship service, church members visited nearby restaurants, cafés, and shops to share New Year greetings and words of encouragement, aiming to help local business owners begin the year with renewed energy.

Handmade Gifts and Personal Visits

For the event, members prepared 500 handmade flowers and New Year sock pouches, which were personally delivered to around 50 local stores. The gifts were made by church members themselves, adding a personal and thoughtful touch to the visits.

Rather than a large public event, the activity focused on direct, face-to-face interaction, allowing members to speak with shop owners and express appreciation for their work in the community.

Boosting Local Economy Through Participation

In addition to the gift-giving, more than 1,000 church members took part in lunch gatherings at nearby restaurants on the same day. This collective participation helped bring increased foot traffic and activity to the local business area.

A restaurant staff member shared that the visits alone were encouraging, and receiving handmade flowers made the day especially meaningful.

A Community-Centered Approach to Encouragement

Senior instructor Jin Man-gi explained that the event was planned as a way for many members to participate in supporting local businesses together. He added that the goal was to offer small but sincere encouragement as shop owners begin the New Year.

Shincheonji Seongnam Church stated that it plans to continue expanding community-based communication events and programs that support both residents and local businesses, contributing to a stronger and more connected local economy.

Strengthening Ties with the Neighborhood

By combining handmade gifts, personal visits, and active participation in local businesses, the New Year encouragement event reflected Shincheonji Seongnam Church’s ongoing effort to engage with the community in practical and positive ways.

The church emphasized that building healthy relationships with local residents and shop owners remains an important part of its approach to community involvement.
