"The Day of Light and Salt": Shincheonji Malawi Marks 1 Year of Environmental Cleanups, Transforming the City of Blantyre

True faith is often measured not by words spoken inside a church, but by the tangible positive changes brought to the surrounding community. A prominent example of this is unfolding in East Africa, where the Malawi Branch of the Bartholomew Tribe of Shincheonji recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of its dedicated environmental cleanup initiative. On May 27th, the church announced the completion of its 17th "Day of Light and Salt" street purification campaign in the Mbayani area of Blantyre, Malawi. Stepping In Where Public Systems Fell Short The initiative originally began in June of last year out of a dire community need. At the time, the city of Blantyre lacked a fully functioning public waste management system, leading to household garbage being abandoned on the streets for long periods and a rampant increase in illegal dumping. Recognizing that environmental health is directly tied to human dignity and community well-being, the members of Shincheonji Malawi dec...

Shincheonji Busan Church Hosts Open House Event with 700 Attendees During Lunar New Year Season

Shincheonji Church of Jesus Busan Church (Busan James Tribe) held a large-scale open house event titled “Come Visit Cheongrang’s House, Cheongrang Will Give You Blessings” on February 7, in celebration of Ipchun (Beginning of Spring) and the Lunar New Year season.

According to the church, approximately 700 people attended the event, including church members’ families, acquaintances, students, and local residents. The program was organized to encourage direct communication with the community and to lower barriers between the church and local citizens.

Community-Focused Experience Booths

More than 10 interactive booths were prepared for visitors. These included:

  • A nostalgic “Memory Shop” experience

  • Caricature drawing

  • Aromatherapy sessions

  • Health consultation services

  • Youth counseling corner titled “Give Today’s Worries to a Doll”

Among them, the “Doctor Check” booth drew significant attention. Health consultations were provided on-site, offering guidance beyond basic blood pressure checks.

One attendee, a 68-year-old male visitor, shared that he initially expected a simple health screening but instead received detailed consultation and practical advice for daily health management.

The youth-focused booth also attracted young visitors seeking encouragement related to employment and career concerns.

Cultural Performances and Lecture on “True Blessings”

The event officially began with energetic opening performances by a practical dance team and a performance group.

Following the performances, Lee Young-no, Tribe Leader of the Busan James Tribe, delivered a lecture under the theme:

“The True Blessing Received in the New Year.”

In his message, Lee referenced the traditional Korean phrase “Ipchun Daegil, Geonyang Dageong” (Wishing great fortune at the beginning of spring). He emphasized that true blessing comes from understanding and following God’s will, and from recognizing the promises recorded in the Bible and their fulfillment.

He expressed hope that the open house would help remove misunderstandings and foster mutual coexistence and goodwill within the community.

Ongoing Community Engagement Plans

A representative of Shincheonji Busan Church stated that the open house follows last year’s “First Fruits Grand Festival” and that many citizens once again visited the church this year.

The church plans to continue expanding community engagement through:

  • Additional open house events

  • Volunteer service activities

  • Cultural programs for local residents

The February 7 event reflects Shincheonji Busan Church’s ongoing efforts to build communication channels with local citizens during major seasonal holidays.

As communities across Korea marked the Lunar New Year season, the Busan Church’s open house brought together residents, families, and visitors in a setting designed for cultural exchange and conversation.
