Strategic Disaster Prevention: Shincheonji Uijeongbu Branch Clears Drainage Systems Ahead of Monsoon Season

Proactive Response to Recurring Flood Risks As the rainy season approaches, localized heavy rains pose a significant threat to residential areas with aging infrastructure. The Ganeung-dong area near Baekseokcheon Stream in Uijeongbu has a history of vulnerability, having suffered substantial property damage in July 2024 and 2019 when rising stream levels caused water to back up into semi-basement homes. To prevent a recurrence of such disasters, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Uijeongbu Branch executed a preemptive safety and environmental improvement operation on May 23rd. Technical Maintenance of Critical Drainage Infrastructure The operation focused on high-risk sectors where blocked conduits often lead to severe localized flooding. One Planet, Two Cities: How Sejong and Wonju are Leading the Charge for Earth Day

The Global Call to Action: Earth Day 2026

Every year on April 22, the world pauses to reflect on the health of our planet. But for the Shincheonji Volunteer Group, reflection isn't enough—it’s time for action. This week, two major cities in Korea, Sejong and Wonju, became the stage for a powerful environmental movement, proving that local efforts can create a global impact.

Sejong: More Than Just Cleaning—It’s an Experience

In the heart of Jochiwon, Sejong, the air was filled with a sense of purpose. On April 10, the Sejong Branch turned the traditional market and riverside areas into a hub for sustainability.

  • Smart Plogging: 30 volunteers hit the trails, collecting litter while walking and jogging, ensuring that the local streams remain pristine.

  • The Eco-Bag Revolution: It wasn’t just about picking up trash. Volunteers set up an Eco-bag making station, teaching citizens how to replace disposable plastics with stylish, reusable alternatives.

"I realized there are so many ways to reduce disposables," shared one participant, inspired by the hands-on experience.

Wonju: Tackling the "Plastic Pandemic" Head-On

Meanwhile, in the bustling district of Dangye-dong, Wonju, the Wonju Branch took on one of the city's busiest commercial hubs. Known for high foot traffic, this area often struggles with discarded cigarette butts and single-use plastics.

  • 250 Liters of Transformation: Volunteers scoured every nook and cranny—from bicycle racks to hidden alleys—collecting a staggering 250 liters of waste in just two hours.

  • The "Green Quiz": To make environmental education fun, the team hosted an OX Quiz and Recycling Workshop, helping residents master the art of waste separation.

"I used to find recycling difficult, but now I'm a pro," said Choi Eun-sook, a local resident who joined the campaign.

A Shared Vision for a Sustainable Korea

Whether it’s the creative workshops in Sejong or the rigorous cleanup in Wonju, the message is the same: Nature is a gift that we must protect together. By engaging citizens through fun and practical activities, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group is turning "Environmental Protection" from a chore into a shared community culture.

As we approach the 56th Earth Day, these two cities stand as a testament to what can be achieved when we work together for our common home.
