Commemorating Memorial Day: Shincheonji Volunteers Host Patriotic and Cultural Initiatives Across Mokpo and Daejeon
Preserving the Spirit of Veterans in Local Communities
The month of June serves as a significant period for national remembrance in South Korea, anchoring civic duties around the sacrifices of fallen patriots and veterans. To bridge the gap between historical remembrance and modern civic awareness, regional branches of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group organized localized educational and supportive events on June 6th, the 71st Memorial Day (Hyeonchungil). Through interactive crafts and welfare stations, the Mokpo and Daejeon Branches provided spaces for residents and traveling families to reflect on national history.
Mokpo: Fostering Historical Awareness Through Interactive Crafting
The Mokpo Branch held its "National Love, Peace, and Sharing" campaign at the KT Dong-Mokpo Well-being Park, focusing on making the meaning of Memorial Day accessible to daily visitors.
Educational Programs: The branch provided instructional sessions on the correct protocol for hoisting the national flag (Taegeukgi) and explained the symbolic meanings behind its components, such as the philosophical representations of the red (yang) and blue (yin) sections.
Participatory Experiences: Citizens engaged in a series of booths, including tasting Hibiscus (Mugunghwa) beverages, solving veterans' trivia quizzes, and crafting personalized "Taegeukgi Moss Terrariums" inside glass jars.
Civic Outreach: Alongside the park event, the Mokpo Branch executed a simultaneous environmental cleanup near Mokpo Station, distributing handcrafted national flag keyrings and informational pamphlets regarding the Month of Defense and Veterans.
Daejeon: Serving 1,000 Cemetery Visitors at National Memorial Transit Hubs
Simultaneously, the Daejeon Branch operated a large-scale support station near Exit 3 of the Daejeon World Cup Stadium Station, a high-traffic transit point where citizens boarded shuttle buses heading to the National Cemetery.
Mass Welfare Support: Amid early summer temperatures reaching 28℃, 22 mobilized volunteers managed a resting area for family survivors and visitors from 9:00 AM to noon, serving free traditional Hibiscus tea to approximately 1,000 attendees.
Commemorative Zones: The station featured a designated Hibiscus photo zone, a dedicated corner introducing the national flower, and an interactive section where children and families wrote messages of gratitude to attach onto a floral map of the Korean Peninsula.
Public Reactions: Commuters and traveling families noted that the station provided a valuable physical resting place while prompting them to pause and consciously reflect on the sacrifices made for public security.
Cultivating a Continuous Culture of Remembrance
The coordinated initiatives by the Mokpo and Daejeon branches demonstrate how civic volunteer groups can active public engagement during significant national holidays. By blending structured educational booths with practical logistical care for cemetery visitors, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group continues to cultivate a modern culture of gratitude and remembrance tailored to the unique demographic needs of each region.
