In modern society, the concept of a "neighbor" is becoming increasingly distant. A recent survey on neighborhood relations in South Korea revealed that over 79% of adults have little to no meaningful interaction with those living nearby, with 46.2% stating they feel completely comfortable with this disconnection.
Yet, behind these numbers lies a deeper longing: over 60% of respondents still recognize the importance of good neighborhood relationships, and 51.4% express a desire for warm, daily interactions.
Responding to this silent need, Shincheonji Church of Jesus launched a nationwide community outreach initiative ahead of Chuseok (the Korean harvest festival). Grounded in the Biblical teaching to "love your neighbor as yourself," members across the country stepped out to bring genuine warmth, listening ears, and practical support to local merchants, senior citizens, and essential workers.
Busan & Wonju: Listening to Local Merchants and Alley Economies
In Busan, volunteers from Andre Church dressed in colorful traditional hanbok to visit 21 local shops around the Bumil-dong neighborhood. They handed out handmade nut assortments and holiday greetings. Rather than a one-way delivery, volunteers conducted surveys to collect merchant feedback on desired community and cultural programs.
Similarly, Wonju Church in Gangwon Province visited over 100 local shops in Usan-dong, delivering snack kits while gathering input to help revitalize the local alley economy. Wonju Church regularly serves the community through parking assistance, plogging, and visits to senior centers.
Daejeon: Over 10 Years of Continuous Neighborhood Friendship
The sincerity of Shincheonji Church’s community work shines brightest in its longevity. In Daejeon, church members have practiced neighborhood sharing for over ten years, providing regular food deliveries, rice sharing, and companionship to local seniors.
For this Chuseok, members visited 30 local restaurants, bakeries, and pharmacies near the church in Yongmun-dong, gifting jars of honey. One local restaurant owner warmly greeted the volunteers by name, sharing: "They check on us all the time. At this point, they feel like family."
Daegu & Gwangju: Caring for Essential Workers and Public Spaces
The outreach extended into daily public spaces and essential services:
Gwangju & Gangwon Regions: Members hosted a "Safe Driving Campaign," handing out sleep-prevention snack kits and encouraging notes to local taxi and bus drivers serving holiday commuters.
Daegu Church: On September 18, volunteers visited Hyeonri-ri in Cheongdo County to deep-clean the public bathhouse and community hall heavily used by elderly residents. The local village head expressed deep gratitude, asking if volunteers could make the cleaning a regular monthly visit.
Serving as a Permanent Bridge of Connection
A representative from Shincheonji Church shared: "In an age where neighborly interactions are fading, years of steady outreach have shown us that hearts open when we approach with sincerity. We will continue to listen to our community's voice and serve as a reliable partner to our neighbors."
By translating faith into decade-long friendships and thoughtful care, Shincheonji Church continues to prove that genuine warmth can melt even the coldest modern isolation.
