Restore Dongcheon Stream: 50 Volunteers Battle Rain and Mud to Restore Suncheon’s Beloved Walkway

Following Heavy Downpours and Stream Overflow, Shincheonji Volunteer Group Suncheon Branch Worked In the Rain to Clear Debris, Silt, and Entangled Weeds

Dongcheon Stream, flowing gracefully through Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, serves as a vital green lung and cherished walking trail for local residents. However, recent severe downpours caused the stream to overflow, submerging pedestrian paths, benches, and riverbank trees.

As the floodwaters receded, they left behind thick layers of slippery mud, heavy silt, and massive tangles of uprooted weeds caught on tree branches and railings—making the walkways completely impassable.

At 7:30 AM on September 1, despite steady rain and humid morning heat, 50 dedicated members of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Suncheon Branch gathered at Dongcheon Stream equipped with rain boots, shovels, rakes, and tongs.



Clearing Entangled Debris from Heights and Bank

The aftermath of the flooding was stark. Weeds and drifting branches hung from tree branches higher than a person's height, while thick mud blanketed rest areas and park benches.

Undeterred by the rainfall soaking their clothes and gloves, volunteers systematically divided into teams along the riverbank:

  • High-Reach Removal: Using long poles, rakes, and gloved hands, volunteers untangled heavy clusters of brush and weeds caught high up in trees and along bridge guardrails.

  • Silt & Mud Clearance: Teams equipped with shovels worked right along the water's edge, scooping out caked mud and clearing silted paths so citizens could walk safely again.

  • Rest Area Sanitation: Mud-covered benches and surrounding park areas were thoroughly scraped, swept, and restored.


Voices from the Field: Warm Heart for the Community

Despite the challenging weather, the atmosphere among volunteers was filled with joy and purpose. Volunteers across various generations shared their motivations:

  • Lee Young-hee (72, female): "As a citizen myself, lending a small hand allows my neighbors to enjoy this beautiful stream again. I joined today with the simple hope that everyone can live in a clean and pleasant environment."

  • Kim Seon-guk (51, male): "I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to put my hands to work and serve as light and salt in our community. Waking up early to contribute to a good cause fills my heart with joy."

A true community partner is one that shows up first when unexpected disasters disrupt daily life.

An official from the Suncheon Branch emphasized:

"We joined hands with one heart to help our local community recover quickly from the severe weather. Moving forward, whenever our region faces difficulties, we will be the first to step forward, sweat together, and provide practical relief."
